Water · pebbles · the filter press

Wet processing of ceramic clay bodies.

At our factory, clays are mixed with water and processed in pebble mills. This liquid mixture, known as slip, then passes through a filter press to become a plastic clay body.

  1. Grinding in pebble mills

We grind the clays with water in pebble mills. This grinding process, distinct from turbo-blunging, allows us to finely sieve the slip at 180 µm.

  2. Sieving at 180 µm

The slip passes through a sieve with 180 µm openings (0.18 mm) before it is dewatered in the filter press.

  3. Mechanical pressure

The filter press separates water from the material. At this stage, we do not dry the clay completely into powder and then add water again.

  4. Reusing water

Filtration water is collected and reused wherever possible. We also use rainwater in our production.

Remove water by pressure. Recover it for reuse.

The filter press is central to our preparation: water is mechanically removed from the slip. Collecting the filtration water allows us to reuse it in the process.

A method shaped by the clay we want to make.

This process takes time and handling. We use it to pursue the qualities we value in our clay bodies: a rich, plastic consistency that is pleasant to shape.

Prepared in Normandy. Where do the clays come from?

Where a clay body is prepared and where its raw materials are extracted are different pieces of information. Here are the origins of the clays used in our ranges and products.
